Why So Many Americans Are Suffering Economically Today – Maria’s Opinion

I think so many people in our country are suffering economically because
there aren’t any jobs.  As a result people cannot afford to pay for college, housing, and health insurance. I think our government needs to have housing that’s affordable for the working class, lower college tuition. Also, all jobs should provide insurance for their employees. And finally, our government needs to create more jobs

Young People’s Role Model – Maria’s Idea

So many kids look up to rappers and ball players as role models, but I don’t think they’re looking at the fact that those who aren’t famous have dreams of living the glamorous life.
Also, kids have to realize that it’s okay to look up to those famous people. Kids need to know that they became famous because they work hard and put a lot of efforts at what they do.  These rappers and ball players are what they are because they are very dedicated.

Washington, DC – Maria’s Experience

Our trip to Washington D.C was very exciting and inspirational. We went to visit Capitol Hill where we met Congresswomen Yvette Clark because she is from Brooklyn, New York like us and her main focus is on health issues. In the future I want to be involved with the medical profession. We also met Congressman Elijah Cummings. I was inspired to hear him speak because he spoke with so much power. His stories were meaningful to me, and his quotes were very powerful. We also had a chance to get a tour of the White House. It is very big and is something I never thought I would be able to see. We also went to tour the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. That was very interesting because now I know where and how the money we spend is made. We visited Georgetown University. Georgetown is beautiful. Their campus is amazing. I really like what the school has to offer. I may soon apply there when it is time. We then went to the Newseum which was filled with information from all sorts of tragedies to biographies of Legends. The Newseum was very emotional because one of the things I saw was the 9/11 tragedy, being that it was in my hometown, New York City. There were also cool models of things from history. The Holocaust Museum we also went to was inspirational and emotional. It was so emotional because I just couldn’t believe how much cruelty, torture and humiliation there was when the Nazis took over. It was inspirational because of, from what I saw on the clips, pictures and models, the Jewish people were very strong, because they knew they had no choice, but to deal with the pain. Now they are not tortured anymore and are free, but only after this terrible tragedy.

Volunteer Abroad or at Home – Maria’s Idea

If I could travel anywhere in the world to volunteer it would be Haiti. I would
go to Haiti to do volunteer work because recently Haiti has been hit with earth
quakes and they really need help. I would want to serve food, help at clinics,
help clean up the environment, and just show them that I really care and I want
to help them.

Child Obesity – Maria’s Idea

All those children are obese because of the food that is given to them. Also some parents let their children eat anything they want or eat anytime they want. I
think parents shouldn’t let their children eat whatever they want after 9pm.
Midnight snacks aren’t good, however if they are allowed to have midnight snacks
it should be something healthy like a fruit. Mayor Bloomberg should propose all
community stores to sale healthy foods as well as junk food and cut down on the
sugar waters all local community kids love. Also he should raise the prices for
junk food and even soda/juice.
